Hardware hacking has been close to my heart ever since I discovered the power to take things apart. For clarification, I do not mean hacking illegally, but hacking in the definition that one may use something for an unintended purpose. I create new innovations and mash-up old ones using various bits of electronics in ways which they were not originally intended for. This is becoming a trend, as we see the Arduino platform multiply and grow with derivatives created – often by artists and designers, a fresh face to the engineering field. Looking at this from multiple vantage points, it is clear that experimentation with computers in culture is strongly influenced by the arts. In the past eight years, a cultural shift in computer art and the ongoing development of electronics has brought physical computing to an important new locus of new culture.
